The rear of many terraced rows was linked by a communal pathway. I remember my grandmother called them 'baileys'. Keeping the 'bailey' clean was a regular household task and a matter of pride, in the same way that the red steps were at the front of the house.

When I lived at the Whistle Inn, near Blaenavon, there was an old farmer called Ike. He was very kind to me and lived in an old farmhouse nearby. The farmhouse is now derelict when I went back a few years ago.
